Merlin Essay
Merlin
Class and status can be represented a few ways in the merlin clip. Throughout the clip the costumes of each individual character is hardly thought out. In the first scene Merlin is dressed in old drags that look dirty and baggy. Also the colours are dull. When the woman walks in she is dressed in a bright purple dress which is clean and shaped perfectly. Covered in jewellery that show her class is high as she is able to afford all these luxuries. This shows that the woman has authority in the building as she looks like she belongs there and merlin is not dressed for the stature of the building. this shows the status of merlin is lower than the woman. Furthermore the knight is dressed in heavy armour that shows his power and is status is high. All the poorer people in the background with low status have drags on like merlin. Also the knight has a weapon to give merlin showing that he has enough money to own weapons and he is confident in his fighting skills because he would of been trained to fight if he has a higher status in those days. This shows the class of the merlin compared to the knight as he is clumsy with the weapon and doesn't know how to use it properly. The knight has two men behind him that are following him round to show his status that he can afford to have two men behind him for protection and support. Lower class people are walking around in the background on there own looking shady. Finally there are expensive looking objects on the table merlin places the object in his hand on. This shows that it is a nice building suggesting he doesn't belong there as merlin doesn't fit with the setting on the room. Merlin is intrigued by the objects which may suggest that he's never seen them before as they are expensive and he's never seen these types of objects before. Showing a lower class.
The editing to fasten up the pace of the chopping between camera angles during the fighting scene to show that merlin doesn't have a lot experience and when you don't know what you're doing you get confused and try and do everything quickly. Merlin is moving about the screen during the fight showing he's all of the place. the knight is slowing strolling about the road teasing merlin due to his knowledge in fighting. When the pace changes it shows that his status is low cause of the poor attributes merlin shows while fighting. This makes you feel sorry for him as merlin has a huge disadvantage. Furthermore the pace changes in the first scene while merlin is in the room and it shows the woman is the purple dress getting closer to the room he is in. The pace change makes it tense and shows that merlin shouldn't be in the room. The build up helps us grab that the woman is in charge and has the higher status in this scene. Merlin is tense in the scene and knows he shouldn't be in there. He then quickly runs out after this.
The camera moving about in the fighting scenes gives us a really good few of other peoples objects and belonging. It shows the knight has no regard for other peoples things showing a higher class and showing a higher status and no one says anything because they know he wouldn't do anything about it or they are scared of him. The camera flows in the fight showing its not a normal fight due to him not knowing whats happening. Also the long shot of the knight shows that he's got men behind him. The camera is deliberately this far away to show his status and class. The camera angle shows his belongings perfectly with other in the background with nothing. This shows the dramatic gap in different classes. Finally the close up of merlins eyes shows he has to use magic during the fight to give him the edge as he can't win it properly. The class is shown her as the fight was easily going to be lost but now he has to advantage. on the other hand the camera stays the same level for each character in the fight as the knight has the advantage of being trained but merlin has his magic. This evens out the playing field in status.
When the knight says "you can't address me like that". This shows the he has a higher class because he picks up on the way merlin speaks. He is disgusted at the way merlin speaks to him showing his higher class as he's not use to hearing this type of terminology.
